Skip Trocadéro: 6 proposal spots Parisians actually love

An honest guide from a Paris proposal photographer: where locals say yes, when to go, and why I avoid Trocadéro.

By Melissa, proposal photographer in Paris

Every guidebook sends you to Trocadéro. I've photographed proposals there, and I'll be honest with you: it's not where I'd send someone I love. Below is my own experience, then the six places Parisians actually choose: the Eiffel Tower without the circus, river views, hidden gardens and a plan B for rain.

1. Bir-Hakeim bridge: my favourite

Practical Calmest early in the morning

This is where I send most couples. The pedestrian walkway runs under the elevated metro, framed by rows of iron columns, with the Eiffel Tower right there. It feels cinematic and much more intimate than Trocadéro.

Early morning is the calmest. Later in the day other couples come too, so we choose a spot between two columns where nobody walks through your moment. Bonus: the metro deck above gives some shelter if it drizzles.

2. Allée des Cygnes: the secret island

Practical Open 24/7 · stairs from the middle of Bir-Hakeim bridge

From the middle of Bir-Hakeim bridge, stairs lead down to a narrow island in the Seine: about 850 metres of tree-lined path, with more than 300 trees. Parisians come here to run, read and walk the dog; tourists rarely find it.

Walk towards the small Statue of Liberty at the far end, or stay near the bridge for a view of the tower through the trees. It's perfect if you want the proposal to feel like a quiet walk rather than a show.

3. Avenue de Camoëns: the tower from a Parisian street

Practical Free, open 24/7 · best at sunrise

Avenue de Camoëns, 75016 Paris · Métro Trocadéro (6, 9)Open in Maps

A short residential dead-end with a stone staircase and a balcony-like view of the Eiffel Tower over the rooftops. It's a few minutes from the Trocadéro esplanade, but it feels like another world.

It has become more popular with photographers lately, so come at sunrise or on a weekday. It's ideal for couples who want the tower in the background without the crowd behind them.

4. Square du Vert-Galant: the tip of the island

Practical Open 24/7, closed in strong wind

Square du Vert-Galant, Place du Pont-Neuf, 75001 Paris · Métro Pont Neuf (7)Open in Maps

Down the stairs from Pont Neuf, at the very tip of Île de la Cité, a small garden with a weeping willow sits almost at water level. Parisians come here for picnics and sunsets, with the Louvre and Pont des Arts across the river.

Golden hour is magical here. The garden closes in strong wind or bad weather, so keep a plan B in mind.

5. Palais-Royal: arcades, garden and striped columns

Practical Free · 8:00–20:30 (Oct–Mar), until 22:30 (Apr–Sep)

Jardin du Palais-Royal, 75001 Paris · Métro Palais-Royal–Musée du Louvre (1, 7)Open in Maps

The Louvre arcades, right next door

Tree-lined alleys, a fountain, long stone arcades and Daniel Buren's black-and-white striped columns in the courtyard: elegant, very Parisian, and calm in the morning.

It's also my favourite rain plan: under the arcades here, or the Louvre arcades two minutes away, you stay dry and the photos stay beautiful.

6. The garden of the Musée de la Vie Romantique

Practical Garden free, 10:00–18:00

Musée de la Vie romantique, 16 rue Chaptal, 75009 Paris · Métro Blanche / PigalleOpen in Maps

A green courtyard at the foot of Montmartre, with roses, trees and a small tea room. It feels like a country house hidden in the city, and most visitors to Paris have never heard of it.

Perfect for a gentle, daytime proposal followed by tea. Arrive at opening for the quietest moment.
